What if the depressed person is not willing to get help ?
Asking for help is often difficult, especially for depressed people who may feel guilty and think that they've "caused enough trouble already." Or sometimes depressed people are faced with a feeling of hopelessness, which stops them from seeking help, thinking, "why bother, nothing will make any difference." Once again, understanding and education are the foundations of a positive approach. Offer depressed family members access to information about depression and its treatments. They may not realize that depression responds well to treatment and that they could be feeling much better soon.
Reassure your loved one that having depression is not a sign of "weakness." Point out that depression is an illness requiring treatment, like pneumonia or arthritis, and that seeking treatment for an illness is nothing to be ashamed of.
If you feel that a depressed friend/family member is having thoughts of suicide, do not hesitate to contact your physician, a local mental health center, or a suicide prevention crisis center. Talk of suicide should always be taken seriously.
